The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has debunked circulating reports claiming that a popular social media influencer was recently arrested by its operatives.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Timfon John, described the claims as “false and misleading,” urging the public to disregard the online narratives suggesting the influencer was in police custody.
“We want to categorically state that no such arrest was made by the Command. The reports making the rounds are baseless and appear intended to incite public tension,” the statement read.
The clarification follows viral posts on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook alleging that the unnamed influencer was apprehended in Uyo over undisclosed charges related to online activities.
The PPRO advised media outlets and content creators to verify information with credible sources before publication to avoid spreading misinformation.
“This Command remains committed to upholding citizens’ rights and the rule of law,” ASP John added.
As of press time, the influencer in question had not issued any public statement, and no formal complaint or legal action has been reported.
Observers note that the denial comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the police’s interactions with online personalities in Nigeria.
