Two men featured in a widely circulated video allegedly smoking marijuana have been arraigned and remanded at the Sapele Correctional Centre in Delta State on charges related to cybercrime.
The suspects, identified as Okiemute Ogbemi and Confidence Ajaino, were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before a Federal High Court sitting in Warri. According to the EFCC, the pair not only engaged in drug-related activities but also committed offences under the Cybercrimes Act.
The controversial video, which drew public outrage online, reportedly showed the men smoking what appeared to be marijuana while flaunting suspicious displays of wealth, prompting further investigation. The EFCC said its findings revealed that the suspects were involved in internet-related fraud.
Justice E. A. Obile ordered the remand of both defendants at the Sapele Custodial Centre pending the next hearing scheduled for July 10.
The EFCC has continued its clampdown on cybercrime suspects, especially those who display alleged proceeds of fraud online. The Commission urged youths to steer clear of drug abuse and internet fraud, warning that both crimes carry severe legal consequences.
