Former SGF Ahmed Yayale Identifies Religious Intolerance and Ethnic Divisions as Obstacles to Development, Calls for Unity to Tackle Poverty in Northern Nigeria

Ahmed Yayale, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, highlighted that religious intolerance and ethnic divisions are fundamental factors contributing to poverty and discord in Northern Nigeria. Speaking at a one-day dialogue session organized by the Arewa New Agenda with the theme “Renewed Hope – The Road to Ending Poverty in Nigeria,” Yayale emphasized the need for the region to address these issues and foster unity to promote development.

Yayale stressed that unless there is a change in mindset, the region will not play a significant role in Nigeria’s overall progress. He urged for greater tolerance, accommodation, and respect among the people to reduce poverty and promote harmony.

Addressing the forum, Senator Ahmad MoAllahyidi, the convener, highlighted the alarming data indicating that approximately five individuals are pushed into severe destitution every minute, positioning Nigeria as a global center for extreme poverty. The Arewa New Agenda Forum urged President Bola Tinubu to address the high rates of poverty, banditry, and kidnapping in Northern Nigeria, expressing concern about the challenges faced by roughly 94 million of Nigeria’s 218 million inhabitants who live in abject poverty.

MoAllahyidi pointed out that 88.4 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, with nearly 80 percent of them residing in the northern part of the country. The ANA emphasized the importance of addressing the rift between two influential figures of northern origin, which has direct implications for poverty reduction in Nigeria.
