Tolu Bankole, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee, has called for the inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in local government administration to enhance equality and combat stigma. Bankole made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.
His call follows a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming that local governments have the right to receive monthly allocations directly from the federation account. The court’s decision grants full autonomy to the 774 local governments, as outlined in the amended 1999 Constitution, and declares it illegal for governors to retain or receive funds allocated to local governments.
Bankole emphasized that the inclusion of PWDs should begin with the upcoming local government elections across the country. He argued that this move is not only a matter of justice but also a significant advancement in Nigeria’s democratic and governance processes.
“The leadership of governors can set a powerful example by promoting an inclusive and equitable political landscape,” Bankole said. “This will uphold the rights and dignity of Persons With Disabilities.”
He referenced the Discrimination Against PWDs (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which provides a framework for protecting and including PWDs in public life, including political participation. The Act mandates equal participation in political activities and prohibits discrimination in electoral processes.
Bankole urged governors to support and encourage PWD candidates, providing mentorship and leadership opportunities. He also called on Nigerians to exercise restraint in planned nationwide protests, advocating for peaceful and constructive dialogue as the most effective means of achieving meaningful change.
