Uche Nwosu, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former chief of staff to Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, has called on Nigerians to reconsider their planned nationwide protest and give President Bola Tinubu time to address the nation’s issues.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Nwosu urged Nigerians to support the president, arguing that it is unrealistic to expect a government that has been in office for just a year to resolve the deep-seated problems that have accumulated over decades.
His appeal follows a recent call from the APC urging parents to monitor their children’s activities to prevent them from being drawn into violence associated with the upcoming protest, scheduled from August 1 to 10. The planned demonstration has stirred significant tension and mixed reactions across the country.
Several groups have supported the protest, citing the rising cost of living and economic hardship as key drivers. However, Nwosu emphasized the need for patience, reflecting on past protests such as the EndSARS movement, which he claimed were marred by violence and property damage.
Nwosu stated, “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to our beloved Nigerian youths to give peace a chance. We are indeed passing through hard times in our dear nation, but we cannot give up hope. It is true that in a democracy, citizens have the right to protest, but most often these protests, especially in a diverse country like ours, do not end well.”
He continued, “President Bola Tinubu’s policies and reforms might seem harsh now, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. He has only been in office for a year. Let’s give him the time to address the abnormalities we have seen and work towards a country of our collective hopes and aspirations. There is no place like home. Nigeria is our country. Let’s work towards making it a place we can all be proud of.”
