Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Urges Colleagues to Reconsider Commissioner-Nominees

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, made a plea to his fellow lawmakers who expressed dissatisfaction with the list of commissioner-nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for screening and confirmation.

During plenary, some lawmakers lamented the exclusion of certain parts of the state in the nominations. Some members urged the House to review the list, while others called for the nominees’ local government areas to be attached to their names.

To address the concerns, the House established a 12-man committee, chaired by Hon. Fatai Mojeed, the Chief Whip. The committee, which comprises other members of the House, is tasked with screening the nominees and providing a report to the assembly.

Speaker Obasa reminded his colleagues that it is not possible for every local government area in the state to have a commissioner, and he urged them to understand the governor’s prerogative in making the nominations. He emphasized that the lawmakers’ role is to screen the nominees and confirm them if they meet the necessary requirements.

During discussions, Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun highlighted the lack of representation from Ikorodu despite contributing to the APC’s success in the last election. Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Ademola Richard Kasunmu expressed concerns about the absence of any nominee from Ikeja.

Hon. Nureni Akinsanya raised the issue that the list did not include the nominees’ local government areas and argued that the APC has qualified technocrats who were not considered. Other members also raised similar concerns about representation from their constituencies and the need for more diverse religious considerations in the list.

In response to the matter, Hon. Femi Saheed, a former secretary of the APC in Lagos, acknowledged the availability of qualified technocrats within the party.

As the House takes these considerations into account, the request has been made to the Governor to include the nominees’ local government areas in the list, as they proceed with the screening process.
