Less than 24 hours before the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election scheduled for February 17, 2024, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a prominent aspirant of the party, has announced his withdrawal from the contest. The former Secretary to the Edo State Government made the announcement at a press conference in Benin City, describing the decision as painful. Despite stepping aside, Ize-Iyamu pledged his support for any APC governorship aspirant who emerges victorious in the primary election.
Reportedly, Ize-Iyamu has directed his supporters across the 192 political wards in Edo State to rally behind Senator Monday Okpebholo, the incumbent Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
In a statement read before journalists, Ize-Iyamu expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC for their fairness and commitment to the democratic process. He acknowledged the commendable efforts of the National Working Committee (NWC) in correcting the erroneous impression that some aspirants, including himself, had been disqualified from the gubernatorial contest.
The decision to withdraw, according to Ize-Iyamu, was made after thorough consultations with family, friends, political associates, and supporters. He emphasized the necessity of the sacrifice for the peace and unity that the party needs at both state and national levels. Ize-Iyamu appealed to the people of Edo State to accept his decision, promising to remain available and supportive.
As the APC primary approaches, it is speculated that other aspirants may also withdraw in favor of a particular candidate. The list of APC aspirants in the race includes Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Prince Clem Agba, Monday Okpebholo, Lucky Imasuen, Hon. Anamero Dekeri, Gideon Ikhine, David Imuse, Major Gen. Charles Ehigie Airhiavbere (rtd), former Governor Oserheimen Osunbor, Blessing Agbomhere, and Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe.
