The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing feud between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu.
This dispute, which has persisted for several months, has attracted disappointment from the PDP as it continues to linger, causing unnecessary tension within the party.
The conflict began when Deputy Governor Shaibu announced his intention to run for governor in 2024. Unfortunately, he failed to secure the support of Governor Obaseki for his gubernatorial ambitions.
Subsequently, the Deputy Governor took the matter to the Federal High Court in Abuja in an attempt to prevent his imminent impeachment by Governor Obaseki. However, he later withdrew the case following the intervention of key stakeholders.
A few days later, the Deputy Governor’s media team was disbanded, and his office was relocated from the Government House in Benin, the state capital.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, Chief Dan Orbih, the PDP National Vice Chairman (South) and former party chairman in Edo, called upon both leaders to halt their public disagreements, which are negatively impacting the image of the PDP in the state.
Orbih expressed surprise at the public dissemination of official government letters that should have remained confidential. He advised Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu to put aside their differences and work towards restoring peace, especially considering the upcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for next year.
He stated, “I have observed with great concern the escalating tensions between Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu. I implore both parties to exercise restraint in their public statements and actions during this unnecessary and protracted crisis.
“To my astonishment, official documents that should remain confidential have now become fodder for social media discussions. I urge both parties to halt hostilities and resolve their disputes discreetly, in the interest of good governance and the progress of the state. Anything less may tarnish the image and prospects of the Party in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
“While we have faced challenges in the past between the party and government, we have always managed to keep them out of the public eye. The PDP is a formidable brand in Edo State, cultivated over the years through the dedication of party leaders and committed members. Unfortunately, this brand is now under serious threat due to the ongoing feud between the Governor and Deputy Governor.
I take this opportunity to implore both parties to declare an immediate ceasefire and work towards an amicable resolution of their differences. God bless PDP. God bless Edo State.
