The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to uphold the integrity of the 2024 budget by promptly initiating an open investigation into alleged insertions and conducting a comprehensive review of the budget.
In a statement released by its national publicity secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party demanded an impartial investigation into the purported improper insertion of N3.7 trillion for fictitious projects in the 2024 budget. The PDP accused the Senate of attempting to quash demands for a transparent inquiry through diversionary press releases.
According to the PDP, the dismissive response from the APC leadership in the Senate indicates apprehension about exposing those responsible for the alleged misappropriation and revealing how funds were purportedly distributed among APC lawmakers.
The party condemned what it described as the insensitivity of the Senator Akpabio-led APC leadership, asserting that their actions disregard the welfare of Nigerians amidst severe economic hardships. The PDP emphasized that no intimidation or harassment could suppress the public’s demand for a thorough investigation into the budget discrepancies.
Despite attacks from the APC leadership, the PDP affirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable, labeling the resistance to investigation as a manifestation of corruption seeking to evade scrutiny.
The party insisted on Senator Akpabio’s withdrawal from the investigation process, asserting that he cannot impartially oversee the inquiry. Furthermore, the PDP urged President Tinubu to intervene and ensure the budget’s integrity through transparent investigation and review processes.
Additionally, the PDP renewed its call for Senator Akpabio to face investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State and as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
The statement underscored the PDP’s commitment to accountability and transparency in governance, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and public trust in the budgetary process.
