Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, expressed deep concern over the discovery of decomposing and headless bodies in Abia State, emphasizing that this grim revelation is indicative of the alarming insecurity plaguing the nation.
During a media parley on Sunday, Governor Alex Otti of Abia disclosed the disturbing find of over 80 bodies, including 20 headless and numerous human skeletons, in the vicinity of the Lokpanta cattle market situated along the Umunneochi axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway.
Reacting to this harrowing incident in a social media post on Thursday, Peter Obi condemned the acts as “barbaric and cruel.” He stressed that such incidents are a stark testament to the pervasive insecurity that continues to afflict various regions in the country, causing the loss of innocent lives and hampering economic growth.
Peter Obi commended Governor Alex Otti for his decisive action in addressing insecurity in Abia State, considering it an exemplary step that other states could emulate.
Drawing from his own experiences as the former Governor of Anambra State, Obi recalled a similar incident in 2013 when he had to deal with a grim situation involving the discovery of approximately 35 decomposing bodies floating in the Ezu River, Anambra. He underscored the importance of prioritizing the security of lives and property as the fundamental duty of any government and the linchpin for meaningful national development.
Peter Obi called on governments at all levels to intensify their efforts in combatting insecurity across the nation, as security remains the cornerstone for the hope of a more secure and prosperous future.
