YouTube, the video streaming platform owned by Google, has increased the cost of its Premium subscription service in Nigeria by 54%. The price for the individual plan has risen from ₦1,100 to ₦1,700, while the family plan now costs ₦2,800, up from ₦1,700—a 64% jump.
The update was communicated to Nigerian subscribers via email on April 4, 2025. “To continue delivering great service and features, we’re increasing your price to ₦1,700.00/month,” the email stated. “We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve YouTube Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.”
The new pricing is set to take effect from each subscriber’s next billing cycle.
The increase is part of a wider global price adjustment. In South Africa, the individual Premium plan will now cost R81.99 per month, with the family plan rising to R149.99. YouTube Music subscribers in South Africa will also see a modest hike—from R59.99 to R64.99 monthly.
In the United States, long-time subscribers who had been paying $7.99 since YouTube Premium’s initial rollout in 2014 are now experiencing their first price increase in a decade.
YouTube Premium offers an ad-free experience, background play, and other exclusive features. The platform reached 100 million paid subscribers across YouTube Premium and YouTube Music in early 2024, reflecting significant growth—up from 80 million reported in November 2022.
Since its rebranding from YouTube Red in 2018, YouTube Premium has introduced various features to enhance user experience, including seamless playback across devices, upgraded 1080p HD quality, and early access to AI-driven tools. Other additions include the Samples tab for music discovery, personalized radio stations, and podcast integration on YouTube Music.
