The National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has said opposition leaders are displeased with the amended Electoral Act because it disrupts what he described as their strategy to challenge the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Morka argued that certain opposition figures had hoped to make real-time electronic transmission of results a decisive legal requirement for validating election outcomes.
According to him, the amendment to the Electoral Act blocks what he termed a “game plan” to invalidate future elections on the basis that results were not transmitted electronically in real time.
He specifically mentioned Peter Obi, Buba Galadima, Atiku Abubakar, and David Mark, alleging that they were aware that internet connectivity remains inconsistent across parts of the country and that making real-time transmission mandatory could create grounds for disputing results in areas with poor network coverage.
Morka’s remarks followed the signing of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday.
However, opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have criticised the new legislation. They described it as undemocratic and argued that it favours the ruling APC as the country prepares for the 2027 polls.
