Gombe, Nigeria (August 6, 2024) – The Gombe State Police Command has arrested 10 individuals for displaying Russian flags during the recent #EndBadGovernance protest. The suspects were paraded on Tuesday at the state Criminal Investigation Department, with authorities condemning the act as disrespectful to national symbols.
Commissioner of Police Hayatu Usman, represented by Public Relations Officer ASP Buhari Abdullahi, emphasized that the display of foreign flags was not only disrespectful but also constituted a treasonable offense. Abdullahi stated, “The raising of foreign flags on August 5, 2024, during the protest was a direct affront to our national symbols and a serious offense. These actions undermine our national integrity.”
The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and order while safeguarding the rights of peaceful protesters. Abdullahi added, “The command’s primary goal is to restore peace and order while ensuring that the rights of lawful protesters are upheld. We will address any violence or unlawful activities decisively.”
In addition to the arrests related to foreign flags, the police also reported significant concerns about looting during the protests. Usman highlighted the theft and vandalism of various properties, including the Gombe State Revenue Recovery Tribunal, Bima Lodge, Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reform, NITEL Company, and Blue-J Motors.
“The looting of both public and private property during these protests is a grave concern,” Usman said. “Such actions not only disrupt communities but also harm businesses and undermine the rule of law.”
A total of 92 suspects have been arrested in connection with the looting, with some of the stolen and vandalized property recovered. The suspects are currently under investigation. Additionally, nine individuals have been apprehended for their involvement in violent acts related to the protests.
The Gombe State Police Command continues to coordinate with local communities and other agencies to address the illegal activities and ensure accountability for those responsible.
