The Supreme Court has taken a reserved stance on the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Saidu Umar, challenging the election victory of Ahmed Aliyu, the governor of Sokoto State and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The panel of justices, comprising five members of the apex court and led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, opted to reserve the judgment after thoroughly considering arguments presented by the involved parties. It’s noteworthy that the Court of Appeal in Abuja had previously upheld Aliyu’s victory in the governorship election held on March 18, 2023.
The basis of the appeal lodged by Umar and the PDP rested on the contention that Aliyu and his deputy, Idris Gobir, were ineligible to participate in the governorship poll. The Supreme Court’s reserved judgment adds another layer of anticipation to the legal battle surrounding the Sokoto State governorship election.
