Tinubu Orders Action to Cut Food Prices Nationwide

President Bola Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to implement measures aimed at reducing the cost of food items across Nigeria, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at a one-day capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents in Abuja, Abdullahi said the committee will ensure the safe and efficient passage of agricultural products through key transport routes, addressing one of the main drivers of food inflation.

“The president has given a matching order with a federal executive council committee already handling it,” Abdullahi stated. “We are working to promote the safe passage of agricultural commodities across various routes in the country.”

He explained that high transportation costs significantly increase food prices by the time goods reach consumers, adding that the initiative supports Tinubu’s broader vision of food sovereignty, which seeks to guarantee availability, accessibility, and affordability of nutritious food on a sustainable basis.

Abdullahi also highlighted upcoming programmes, including the Farmer Soil Health Scheme and a cooperative sector reform, designed to mobilize resources, boost productivity, and improve livelihoods in the agricultural sector.

The workshop, themed “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges and Responsibilities,” featured additional presentations by Senate Media Committee Chairman Sen. Yemi Adaramodu, former presidential aide Sen. Ita Enang, and NILDS Director-General Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman.
