Yobe State – In a recent announcement, Dr. Mamman Mohammed, the Chairman of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission, disclosed the rescheduling of the chairmanship and councillorship elections to May 25, 2024. The decision was conveyed to stakeholders in the state during a public address.
Dr. Mohammed revealed that the approval for the adjustment of the election date was granted by Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni. The shift to May 25, 2024, aligns with the provisions of Section 197 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended. The chairman assured that the state’s media outlets would play a crucial role in disseminating this information to the electorate.
He emphasized the importance of security in all polling units and welcomed input from the public regarding potential areas of concern. Dr. Mohammed stated, “While our security agencies ensure there is security in all polling units, we welcome advice on grey areas and vulnerable areas to catastrophe.”
The chairman further noted that political parties would receive election guidelines to facilitate the selection of suitable candidates. This, he believes, will contribute to the establishment of effective governance at the grassroots level.
Addressing his team, Dr. Mohammed urged members of staff and electoral officers to redouble their efforts, expressing confidence in their ability to ensure a successful electoral process. He reiterated the commitment of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct elections that are free, fair, credible, and peaceful.
As the election date undergoes adjustment, the state gears up for the upcoming local government council elections, anticipating the active participation of political parties and a well-coordinated electoral process.
